you know what's hilarious, last night i was watching an episode of family guy and saw another direct homage to the music man. it was the scene from music man where the little girl was playing her piano exercises during her lesson. and the other sang a song along with it.
Erin and I have caught a lot of musical homages in Family Guy. They've done "Somewhere That's Green" (the old pervert with the walker sang it about Chris). Several times they've referenced "Sound of Music" and Stewie has sung "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face", "Why Can't the English Teach Their Children How to Speak" and "The Rain in Spain"... all in that speak-sing Rex Harrison style and all in different episodes.
Other "musical productions" in the series I am not astute enough to catch the antecedent for, but there was the "Rhode Island Bound" bit, "I Need a Jew" and of course the barbershop quartet numbers as well as the vaudeville guys making regular appearances.
Sometimes the musical numbers are short, other times they are full-blown and full-length. MacFarlane does them in multiple voices. I think this show is one of the best on TV in a long time. Long live Adam West!
